Creating The Basic Portal

This page explains how to build the basic portal: crafting its special blocks, putting together the frame, and fixing common problems.

Minimum Materials

For one basic portal you will need:

  • 9 ร— Stone Bricks
  • 3 ร— Chiseled Stone Bricks
  • 24 ร— Gold Ingots
  • 1 ร— Trapped Chest
  • 1 ร— Eye of Ender

You will also need Portal Keys later, but those are covered on the key page.

Crafting Important Blocks

First, make three Gilded Portal Blocks. Each one is crafted by surrounding a Chiseled Stone Brick with 8 Gold Ingots in the crafting grid.

Next, use one of those Gilded Portal Blocks to create the Portal Keyhole Block. Combine:

  • 1 ร— Gilded Portal Block
  • 1 ร— Trapped Chest
  • 1 ร— Eye of Ender

You will end up with:

  • 1 ร— Portal Keyhole Block
  • 2 ร— remaining Gilded Portal Blocks

Valid Portal Builds

The portal frame is made of Stone Bricks with three golden blocks as accents.

Basic requirements:

  • A ring of Stone Bricks surrounding two air blocks where the portal forms.
  • The top center block in the ring is replaced by the Portal Keyhole Block.
  • The two side pillars each get a Gilded Portal Block on top.

Here is the minimum valid shape:

Minimum valid portal frame

You can sink the frame partly into the ground so players can walk straight in instead of jumping. Even if some bricks are hidden below floor level, they still must be there.

You are free to decorate the surrounding room however you like. Only the Stone Brick frame, the three golden blocks, and the two internal air spaces are checked by the mod.

Other Stone Brick variants (mossy, cracked, chiseled, etc.) are allowed in the frame, but not infested bricks.

Once the frame is built, inserting an activated key into the Portal Keyhole Block will form the portal.

Troubleshooting

Problem: I insert my key and nothing happens (acts like inserting dirt)

Possible causes:

  • You are using a blank key instead of an activated one.

See the page on Creating and Using Basic Portal Keys.

  • The two blocks directly below the Portal Keyhole Block are not air; they must be `minecraft:air`.

Problem: I insert my key and the portal appears briefly, then shatters

Possible causes:

  • A required part of the frame is missing.

Check that all 9 Stone Bricks and all 3 golden blocks (1 Keyhole + 2 Gilded) are present.

  • You used an infested brick variant somewhere in the frame; those are not valid portal blocks.
  • The key is actually an advanced key and needs an advanced portal frame, not the basic one.

Once your frame layout and blocks match the rules above, the portal should remain stable when you insert a valid activated key.
